About the Session

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, analyzing Census Bureau and BLS data, found that recent college graduates are more prone to being underemployed compared to graduates in general. This means they often end up in jobs that don't typically ask for a college degree. In September 2023, a substantial 40.1% of college graduates aged 22 to 27 were in underemployed positions.

Adding to the challenge, less than half of college graduates complete an internship, making the transition from college to career appear quite bleak for the class of 2024.

So, what role can public/private partnerships play in helping jumpstart early-career opportunities for students and level the playing field for all students?

Join Jeff Selingo and Podium Education on January 29th for a panel discussion with thought-leaders from industry and higher education.

During this one-hour webinar you’ll learn:

  • The Employer's Lens: Step into the shoes of employers as Shawn VanDerziel (NACE) and Michael Campbell (Intel) provide a firsthand account of what employers seek in graduates and innovative ways they are partnering with institutions to reach future talent long before senior year and the job search begins.
  • Unveiling the Dynamics of Public/Private Partnerships: Explore the intricate dance between academia and private enterprises as Philomena Mantella (GVSU President) and Chris Parrish (Podium) shares the nuances of effective collaborations between universities and private enterprises and the role companies like Podium play in connecting the university and employer worlds together. Gain insights into how such partnerships not only enhance students' skill sets but also contribute to the evolution of curricula, ensuring they align with the ever-changing demands of the job market.
  • Future Casting: Finally, the panelists will discuss the future of private/public partnerships and how it hinges on innovative strategies and adaptive models envisioned by both employers and universities. They’ll explore emerging technologies, industry trends, and collaborative avenues that promise to shape future relationships and align with the evolving demands of the workforce.

The webinar will conclude with an open-forum Q&A session, so please bring any questions along with you. If you can’t make the live webinar, make sure you register to receive a recording. We look forward to seeing you there!

Dr. Philomena (Philly) V. Mantella is the fifth president of Grand Valley State University (GVSU). She oversees Michigan’s third-largest public university, with more than 22,000 students, 3,000 faculty and staff across three campuses, and six regional centers.

Since taking over in 2019 as the university’s first female president, Dr. Mantella has expanded the university’s offerings and potential learners with programs aimed at non-traditional and underrepresented students. This led to GVSU welcoming their largest and most diverse incoming class ever in the fall of 2023 and an overall increase in enrollment at a time when higher education faces consistent challenges and steep demographic declines.

Dr. Mantella’s commitment to growth and disruption is at the core of her work to redefine what higher education is for the public good. She is focused on education’s fitness for the future, equipping graduates with the competencies and mindset to succeed in the dynamic knowledge economy. This includes the creation of a number of unprecedented partnerships with the business community, the development of a national alliance to give underrepresented student voices a say in their education and the breaking down of barriers to increase access to higher education for adult learners.
